Alan J. Levy, Ph.D., President and Chief Executive OfficerDr. Levy joined Heartstream in November 1993 and brings more than 25 years of experience in the medical device industry. From 1989 to 1993 he was president of Heart Technology, Inc., a company that develops, manufactures, and markets devices for removing plaque from coronary arteries. He successfully guided the company through FDA approval, manufacturing scale-up, an IPO, and worldwide sales and distribution. Before joining Heart Technology, Dr. Levy was vice president of research and new product development and a member of the board of the Ethicon division of Johnson & Johnson. At Ethicon he was responsible for the acquisition and/or development of a large number of medical products including synthetic absorbable sutures, coronary stents, and devices for minimally invasive surgery. Dr. Levy received his B.S. in chemistry from City University of New York and his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from Purdue University.
Keith M. Serzen, Vice President of Sales and Marketing Mr. Serzen came to Heartstream from Nellcor, Inc. where he was vice president/ general manager of the Sensor and Monitoring Divisions, with responsibility for sales, marketing, manufacturing, engineering, and R&D for a substantial portion of the company. While at Nellcor, he built the company's North American distribution organization and grew sales from zero to $140 million in seven years, making Nellcor one of the fastest-growing companies in the history of the medical industry. Prior to his 11 years of experience with Nellcor, Mr. Serzen held management and sales positions with several companies in the healthcare industry including American Hospital Supply Corporation, Physio-Control Corporation, and Ross Laboratories. Mr. Serzen holds a B.A. in marketing from the University of Illinois.
Carlton B. Morgan, Vice President of ResearchMr. Morgan brings to Heartstream more than 15 years of experience in defibrillation research and in the design and development of external defibrillators. Prior to co-founding Heartstream, Mr. Morgan was research investigator for Physio-Control Corporation where he directed the company's electrical therapy research and pioneered the early development of automated defibrillators. Mr. Morgan received a B.S.E.E. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and an M.S.E.E. from the University of Washington, where he also conducted postgraduate work in bioengineering and electronic circuit design.
Curtis R. Hafner, Vice President of EngineeringMr. Hafner joined Heartstream in September 1996 and brings nearly 20 years of experience in the design and development of medical electronic instrumentation for use in diagnostic- and monitoring-related healthcare. Most recently, Mr. Hafner was the director of engineering for the Patient Monitoring Division of Marquette Electronics, Inc., where he was responsible for the engineering activities of a $120 million division and introduced 14 major products within a one and a half year period. He holds a B.S.E.E. from Milwaukee School of Engineering.
Lori J. Glastetter, Vice President of Regulatory Affairs and Quality AssuranceMs. Glastetter came to Heartstream from the Bentley Division of Baxter Healthcare Corporation where she was the director of regulatory affairs with responsibilities for domestic and international agency interface, compliance, and submissions. She has over 14 years of experience in regulatory affairs, quality assurance, and clinical program design and has completed numerous regulatory filings of IDEs, 510(k)s, and PMAs with the cardiovascular division of the FDA. Ms. Glastetter received a B.S. in microbiology from California State University, Long Beach and an M.B.A. from California State University, Fullerton.
Kenneth M. Jenkins, Ph.D., Vice President of ManufacturingDr. Jenkins joined Heartstream in May of 1994. He has held positions at Eldec Corporation as director of manufacturing, at Applied Microsystems Corporation as vice president of manufacturing, and at Virtual Vision, Inc., as vice president of operations. He brings more than 14 years of experience in manufacturing management, consulting, and education including extensive experience in the production of electronic devices to military specifications and NASA standards. Dr. Jenkins received a B.S. in manufacturing from California State University, Long Beach, an M.B.A. from Arizona State University, and a Ph.D. in manufacturing from Arizona State University.
Gary Onn, Director of Finance and AdministrationMr. Onn came to Heartstream in April 1994 from Aldus Corporation where he was the financial reporting manager. His experience also includes seven years in public accounting with Ernst & Young where he was an audit manager. Mr. Onn received a B.A. in business administration from the University of Washington and is a certified public accountant.
James R. Shay, J.D., Chief Legal Counsel and SecretaryMr. Shay joined the company in November 1995 as Chief Legal Counsel and Secretary. From 1992 until joining Heartstream, Mr. Shay practiced intellectual property law with the firm of Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco, first in an Of Counsel position and then more recently as a partner. From 1990 to 1992, Mr. Shay served as patent counsel at Nellcor, Inc. Prior to joining Nellcor, Mr. Shay worked at the intellectual property law firm of Townsend and Townsend in San Francisco. Mr. Shay holds a B.S.M.E. from Princeton University and a J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center.
John F. Harris, Director of Business DevelopmentPrior to co-founding Heartstream, Mr. Harris was a product manager at Physio-Control Corporation where he was responsible for the company's line of monitor/defibrillator/pacer equipment for the prehospital market. His background includes experience in marketing, finance, consulting, and engineering project management. Mr. Harris received a B.S. in industrial engineering from Stanford University and an M.B.A. from Northwestern Universitys Kellogg School of Management.
Kay R. Lester, Director of Corporate Accounts Ms. Lester came to Heartstream in November of 1996 from Nellcor Puritan Bennett. She brings more than 13 years of sales and sales management experience from the pulse oximetry industry. While with NPB, Ms. Lester was responsible for building the first specialty sales organization focused on marketing and maintaining a mature product line of oximetry and oximetry sensors. During her last two years with NPB, she was the OEM/license sales manager with responsiblitities of negotiations, domestic and international contracts, and sales and marketing of OEM oximetry modules. Ms. Lester received a B.S. in pharmacy from Purdue University.
Bradley J. Tvedt, Director of International Sales Mr. Tvedt joined Heartstream in July 1996 with eight years of experience in the cardiovascular device market and 14 years in sales management. Prior to Heartstream, Mr. Tvedt was the Director of International Sales at Heart Technology, Inc. with responsibility for launching the company's product line in international markets. Before joining Heart Technology, Inc., Mr. Tvedt was vice president of Namic International with responsibility for worldwide sales and marketing. Mr. Tvedt received a B.S. from the University of Wisconsin River Falls.
Bradford E. Gliner, Director of ResearchPrior to co-founding Heartstream, Mr. Gliner directed electrical therapy research in collaboration with international academic and clinical researchers at both The Johns Hopkins University and Physio-Control Corporation. His expertise on the various factors influencing defibrillation success and his publications in leading journals have earned considerable respect in the field of defibrillation science. Mr. Gliner received a B.S.E.E. from the University of Illinois and an M.S. in biomedical engineering from The Johns Hopkins University.
Donald M. Abbey, Director of Quality Assurance Mr. Abbey joined Heartstream in May of 1996. Prior to joining Heartstream, Mr. Abbey was responsible for Quality Engineering and Program Management at Boston Scientific Northwest Technology Center. His background includes experience in project management, internal auditing, supplier management, receiving inspection, quality control, and quality engineering. Mr. Abbey received a B.S.E.E. from Washington State University.
Michael Adams, Director of Information Services Mr. Adams came to Heartstream in September of 1994 from Intermec Corporation, where he was the Manager of Engineering Services. He brings more than 14 years of experience in systems integration and design, CAD/CAM tools, and MRP systems. Mr. Adams received a B.S.E.E. from Oregon State University.
