Martin Mellish grew up in England and was trained as a research mathematician, but left for India in 1977 to study meditation. He learned T'ai Chi in an Indian ashram, practicing many hours each day and combining his practice with meditation. He also earned his black belt in Wadokai Karate during this period, and taught both Karate and T'ai Chi in the ashram.
On his return to Europe he studied with Chu King Hung, Yang Style lineage holder and disciple of Yang Shau Chung. He immigrated to the U.S. in 1987 and resumed his T'ai Chi studies with Harrison Moretz.
In 1988 he won a medal in the U.S. T'ai Chi championships: in 1989 he met Gao Fu and started his studies with her.
Between 1990 and 1993 he won a total of nine medals in U.S. and Canadian national T'ai Chi competitions, including six first places.
In 1995 he was invited to visit Master Gao Fu in China, studied both with her and with with her own teachers, and learned both everyday Chinese and Chinese T'ai Chi and Chi Kung vocabulary.
In 1997 Martin and his wife invited Gao Fu to the States.
